What is Broadband?

This is a relative term used to describe a new way of accessing the Internet that is significantly faster than using the traditional methods.

The traditional method for most Home Users and Small Businesses is to use a device called a modem that connects to your analogue telephone line.

This method is now known as Narrowband.

Broadband still uses a modem and a phone line but transmit the information using much higher frequencies that are beyond that used in normal voice transmissions.

Why is Broadband so popular?

  • It is typically 40 times faster.
  • You do not pay call charges.
  • You can stay connected permanently at no extra cost.
  • You can use the phone while connected, for voice or fax calls.
  • You can make outgoing phone calls using the Internet, instead of using the phone.

Should I use ADSL or Cable?

ADSL is BT’s implementation of Broadband, to use this you have to have an analogue phone line supplied by BT.

Your premises / house must be serviced by a Broadband exchange.

Cable is only available if your premises / house can be serviced by a Cable TV provider, such as NTL.

What does it cost?

For ADSL, there are 3 costs.

  1. You need to buy an ADSL modem.
  2. You need to pay a set up fee to BT for your line to be modified.
  3. You pay a monthly fee to a Service Provider, typically between £20 and £35.

For Cable, there are no set up fees equivalent to ADSL as you will probably be an existing Cable TV customer anyway, the monthly fee are usually under £20.

How do I get Broadband?

Although you can buy it directly from BT, you can buy it from most Internet providers. Most providers will normally charge less than BT or will offer additional features or services.

The cheaper end of the market is usually a trimmed down service who will probably only have a skeleton staff on support, meaning if you need a lot of help setting it up on your PC or you have some technical problems then they may not be the right choice.
